Jia wears a modern cheongsam, evolved from a traditional ceremonial garment from the Qing dynasty.  This westernized version was favored by the fashionable social elite and celebrities of Shanghai in the 1920's, for its tailored and flattering fit.  Soon, Hollywood actresses were seen wearing it, that propelled its popularity worldwide.
